Stand up paddleboarding -BASIC SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS-
Check weather conditions and hourly forecast before you SUP. See above.
Weather-Conditions change quickly especially in the mountains - Do not SUP when lightning is present or in conditions beyond your skill level.
Winds at speeds over your paddling speed ex) 5 mph can add significant difficulties when heading into the wind.
Your body almost acts like a sail when standing up and this can be helpful or add to the challenge.
Paddle on your stomach if you get caught in a storm to keep low profile and get out asap.
Lighter and less powerful paddlers can have difficulties in windy conditions.
Tacking against the wind like a sailing craft- using available natural wind breaks or paddling from knees or on your stomach can help.
Sun Exposure-Sun Reflection off glassy-calm water intensifies sun damage use-extra sun screen.
Underwater hazards-Many rock, dead trees and other hidden hazards may exist in certain areas.
Falling- Fall flat in the water- preferably on your bottom- and try not to go down deep unless you are confident of safe water depth.
Boat Traffic-Stay within 200 feet of shore- Don't assume a boat sees you-
Boat wakes- Steer directly into the oncoming wake or ride with the wave if you have enough distance from shoreline.
Life Jackets-A must for children, long touring, and is always a good idea.
Life Guards- Very few locations have lifeguards.
SUPing with a partner is recommended and always tell someone where you are going.
